The first 4-rider team in the 50-59 age category reached Annapolis today 6 days, 21 hours and 57 minutes after rolling out of Oceanside. Their average speed for the 3,068-mile distance was 18.5 mph.
The team's name and inspiration comes from the team captain James Sheairs’ young son, Joel, who passed away in 2013 after many years of medical issues. They rode in Joel’s honor, as Team Joely Bug. Joel is the reason they raced and raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to support the treatment and research St. Jude’s offers to help defeat pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
